Track # 1 – Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve This song relates to Newland’s feelings of being trapped within his privileged lifestyle. He no longer wants to be a part of New York high society, but he also knows that he can’t break free. In the chorus of the song it says, “But I'm here in my mold, I am here in my mold…I can't change my mold.” The lines reflect Newland’s feelings after he meets Ellen Olenska. He’s no longer satisfied playing the role he’s been cast, however, he cannot escape. Track #2 – Just a Girl by No Doubt Throughout the novel, there are rigid gender roles and expectations that limit the women in the book. Countess Olenska is stuck in a holding pattern because she cannot divorce her corrupt husband because it will cause scandal for her family. Divorce was frowned upon at the time. Also, May Welland, Newland’s young bride, knows her husband is in love with her cousin, but she cannot confront him. As a woman, she is expected to just deal with her husband’s indiscretions. Gwen Stefani sings, “Oh, I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite, so don't let me have any rights,” which is a sentiment felt throughout the novel. Track #3 –Untouchable Face by Ani DiFranco This song reflects the love triangle in the story. Ellen is in love with Newland and Newland is in love with Ellen. However, because it would cause pain and scandal for everyone involved, they cannot be together. In the song, DiFranco is in love with someone who is in a relationship and say, “…too bad you had to have a better half. She's not really my type But I think you two are forever. And I hate to say it, but you're perfect together.” These lines reflect Ellen’s attitude that Newland should be faithful to his wife and that they are well matched.
